Optician is a general term that covers both optometrists and dispensing opticians. NHS West Sussex has contracts with over 90 optician practices in West Sussex so you have a wide range of choices.
Who is this service for?
NHS West Sussex has contracts with over 90 Optician practices in West Sussex. The service they provide is for all.
What does this service do?
It is advisable to have your eyes tested every two years and an optician will be able to tell you if you are entitled to free eye tests. If you do need glasses or contact lenses you may be eligible for help with the costs.
They look for signs of eye disease which may need treatment from a doctor or eye surgeon and prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses.
Dispensing opticians fit glasses and contact lenses, but do not test eyes. They can give you advice on types of lens, such as single-vision or bifocal, and help you to choose frames.
Where are patients seen?
There are Optician practices throughout West Sussex giving service users a wide choice.
Some opticians offer a domiciliary (home visit) service for housebound patients which may include those in nursing homes or care homes. You will be able to find out if your preferred optician offers this service by using the search above which will link into the NHS Choices website.
How can I access this service?
You do not need to be referred and you do not need to register with an optician. You can visit one at any time by making an appointment directly with them.
